Studies have shown that a breast cancer diet or a breast cancer prevention diet go a long way in preventing this deadly disease. Research has shown that about one third of cancers are linked to diet and thus breast cancer and diet go hand in hand. So what then, is a breast cancer diet and how does it help one. A breast cancer diet is one that contains specific nutrients that are naturally found in fruits and vegetables. These specific nutrients play a vital role in reducing the risk of breast cancer.

A breast cancer diet is one that should be largely vegetarian. It should be low in red meats and contain legumes and whole grains as well. Given below is a list of foods that one should incorporate in a breast cancer diet.

A breast cancer diet plan should have the following foods:-

Fiber: Fiber is known to reduce the amount of fat in the body.

Fiber is found in several foods but it is necessary to consume enough fiber to achieve the daily requirement. Some good sources of fiber are:-

  • Whole grains – choose from a variety of pastas, breads and cereals, all of which come in whole grain varieties.
  • Beans – Make these a part of the meal as they provide a quick fiber boost.

Fruits and vegetables: Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your breast cancer diet. These contain carotenoids and pycnogenols.

Beta carotene is the most popular carotenoid. Do not make the mistake of taking supplements. Get your vitamins from food, not supplements.

Aim at a minimum of 5 servings a day of fruits and vegetables, 10 is the optimal amount.

Meat consumption: Limit meat consumption and in particular red meat, to two servings as week. Do trim the fat from meat before grilling and avoid foods that have been charred.

Soy: Research has shown that soy can help in the prevention of breast, colon, and lung cancers. Soy is beneficial and can be consumed in many forms. Try and have 1-2 servings a day.

Other foods: Tea (at least 3-5 servings a day), Monounsaturated fats like olive oil, flaxseed and fish.

A nutritious breast cancer diet coupled with exercise is essential. Exercise also plays a role in fighting cancer. Regular exercise helps curb obesity and thus reduces the risk of cancer.
